Sirapob, Denwit, Wisut, Kammalas share lead in Chiang Mai

Amateur Sirapob Yapala The Thai international, 16, made four birdies against alone bogey at par-71 Mae Jo Golf Resort and Spa. Joining him at the top of the leaderboard were former Thai national player Denwit David Boriboonsub, Wisut Artjanawat and Kammalas Namuangruk.

Wisut was supposed to take a lead only to suffer a final hole double-bogey.

One was down further was Thanakorn Thipayachan while Charng-Tai Sudsom and Chanachok Dejpiratanamongkol were in a group of five players at joint 6th on 2-under.

Chiang Mai-born Sirapob admitted taking the course with tough conditions into account, his first-round performance was beyond his expectation. He credited his ball-striking and tee-shots for a good start to the three-million-baht tournament.

“The course is tough. The fairway is quite narrow and you must hit a ball straight,” said the golfer, whose best result on the tour was 13rd finish in Khon Kaen two weeks ago.

“As an amateur, I am still nervous playing against professionals. Anyway, I am getting used to it. As for my performance, it is getting better after working on my swing two weeks ago.”

Meanwhile, Denwit, turning pro 11 months ago, said that the key to his impressive round was the course management. He should have done better had he avoided three-puttings at 5th and 18th.

Ranked third on the ATGT money list, Settee Prakongvech carded a 70 to share 11th with the likes of Pol Kemarat, American Berry Henson and Jaturon Duangphaichoom. Settee is seeking his second win on All Thailand Golf Tour this year following his triumph in Phuket in September.

Local favorite Kosuke Hamamoto, who is bidding for his first professional title, made three birdies in the first four holes before dropping three shots en route for a 71.  As an amateur, Kosuke once won the Singha Classic 2015, defeating Nicolas Colsaerts in the playoff.

Former champion Peradol Panyathanasedh, the only former champion in the field, started his attempt to win here again with a tie for 36th following a 73. Peradol won in 2018.

The 8th edition of Singha Chiang Mai Open offers a total purse of 3 million baht.  The winner gets 450,000 baht and expected five-world ranking points.
